How to Condense Your Life into Six Words

Ted Talk – How to Write a Six Word Memoir

A six word memoir is a personal reflection on life. They can be serious, funny or sad. They can expand to an entire life or capture the tiniest moment in time.

A six word memoir may also be a poem, story or joke. This combination of styles adds dimension and power to the writing.

The Six-Word Memoir

Initially launched in 2006 by Larry Smith, founder of SMITH Magazine, the six-word memoir is a way to describe one’s life in just that. It’s a popular project and book series, often heard around the world at Six-Word Memoir “slams” and in hospitals and veterans’ groups, after-school programs and in houses of worship, and even during speed dates.

This is a great activity to introduce as you’re building community and teaching content, allowing students to see the many ways that an idea can be expressed. Encourage them to use metaphors, tell a story, or utilize joke structure (e.g., set-up / setup / punch!).

The Art of Writing

Writing a memoir can feel intimidating for students. This exercise is designed to help them write a concise, impactful piece without overwhelming them. It is also a great way to practice editing and cutting out superfluous words.

The first step in creating a six word memoir is to reflect on significant events in your life. Think about the emotions you felt and the core themes of your experiences.

You can even have your students do this activity with historical figures they are learning about. This will help them get to know their characters and understand their perspective. They could also write a six word memoir after reading nonfiction to show their understanding of the topic.

The Six-Word Story

The six word story is a quick, creative writing prompt that has become popular on the internet and in classrooms. It is thought to have originated with Ernest Hemingway, who challenged his friends at a dinner party to write a complete story in only six words. Hemingway’s legendary response: “For sale, Baby shoes, never worn.”

Students use this as an exercise to distill a topic down to its most important parts and choose the best six words to describe it. This is an excellent way to teach the skill of narrative arc and concise description. The stories also provide a great opportunity to practice being selective with word choice and combining poetry with prose.

The Six-Word Poem

Six words can distill a pivotal moment or convey a person’s emotions. Using this short writing form, students can create stories, jokes, or memoirs.

Larry Smith, founder of the online magazine SMITH, challenged his community to encapsulate their lives in six words. The result is a series of tiny memoirs, now collected in the book It All Changed in an Instant.

Teachers can use this simple writing prompt to kick off a unit on memoirs. The six-word memoir can also be a great way for students to connect with historical figures they’re studying, such as Jeannette Walls or Martin Luther King Jr. When they read, “Life is better with headphones on,” students may nod in recognition or agreement.

The Six-Word Joke

In 2006, Larry Smith challenged his community to encapsulate their lives in six words. Their responses were so moving and funny that he created a book of them, Things Don’t Have to Be Complicated: Illustrated Six Word Memoirs.

Whether your six-word story makes people cry or laugh, it’s important to think about how you’re structuring it. Try using some of the set structures that jokes use: for example, a triple (setup – setup – punch!) or a simile (like a lion, but with a bald spot). Students can also experiment with substituting word choice to refine their six word memoir. This will allow them to explore the connotation of specific words and the effect that has on their audience.

The Six-Word Poetry

Whether a story or poem, a memoir or joke, the constraint of six words fuels rather than inhibits creativity. When SMITH Magazine editor Larry Smith challenged his community to encapsulate their lives in exactly six words, he inspired a global movement that continues to this day.

Grab a pen and paper or sit down at your computer. Do a first burst of ideas and write as many six word memoirs as you can. Then, go back and edit them to get down to the best ones. You might be surprised to see how well some of them work as poetry, stories, jokes, or a hybrid of styles.

Unconventional Perspectives on Happiness

TEDx Talks on Happiness

Many TED and TEDx Talks offer inspiration on how to be happier. However, some have specific research on happiness or unique perspectives.

In this inspiring talk, Daniel Gilbert discusses his own experience and research on happiness. He argues that the brain misjudges what brings true happiness and that we should strive for eudemonic happiness over hedonic happiness.

The Surprising Science of Happiness by Daniel Gilbert

Whether you’re looking to boost your own well-being or inspire those around you, these talks on happiness from psychologists, journalists and monks will open your eyes. While they’re a great way to learn new ideas, these videos are not a substitute for professional help.

Gilbert, a high school dropout who started his career as a science fiction writer, says that the brain misjudges what truly brings happiness. He backs up his claims with a decade of research at Harvard’s Hedonic Psychology Laboratory.

Sam Berns, a young man born with progeria (a genetic condition that causes premature aging), has accomplished more than many people will in a lifetime. In this TED Talk, he shares his three personal philosophies that have helped him overcome obstacles and pursue his dreams. This talk has a powerful message that everyone can learn from. It’s one of the most popular TED Talks on happiness. A must-see! TED Talks are available on a variety of online platforms.

Finding Happiness in the Himalayas by Matthieu Ricard

As she browses the shelves at her local bookstore, Sarah’s eyes alight on a book with a serene cover – “Happiness” by Matthieu Ricard. He’s a French monk, author, photographer and former molecular biologist who once worked in the cellular genetics laboratory at the Pasteur Institute in Paris. Today he lives at the Shechen Monastery in Nepal and coordinates various humanitarian projects.

Throughout his book, Ricard demonstrates that happiness requires more than self-gratification and pleasure seeking. He explains that the key to happiness is cultivating the inner qualities of compassion and mindfulness. He shares the story of a homeless man whom Ricard approached with a simple act of kindness and compassion.

The Art of Happiness by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

This classic book explores the ways in which people can overcome everyday anxieties and frustrations. It uses stories, meditations and conversations to help readers find peace in a busy and stressful world. It also combines 2,500 years of Buddhist teachings with an understanding of modern psychology.

The co-founder of the field of positive psychology, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi devoted his life to finding out what makes life worth living. His work was both scientific and humanistic, with a deep humility that put students and colleagues at ease. His books, including Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience, focus on the idea of flow, or a state where an individual is completely absorbed in an activity. His research involved interviewing athletes, musicians and artists to discover when they were most in the zone. He found that this state of flow could be achieved in a number of activities, such as rock climbing, writing, playing sports or painting. His early interviews focused on artists, and he noticed that they were after an experience that was not the finished product, but the feeling of absorption and immersion in the creative act itself.

The Science of Happiness by Anthony Ives

Whether you’re looking to build better relationships with a long-distance partner or boost your overall well-being, these talks from psychologists, journalists and monks can help.

TED Talks are all about sharing ideas that can spark change. They can inspire, educate and even transform the way you think.

In a genre dominated by writers like Gaddis, DeLillo and Wallace, Life Is Everywhere marks the entrance of a new player: the “systems novel.” These books depersonalize in favor of zooming out to show how systems at work impart their influence over characters.

Matthieu Ricard, a Buddhist monk and associate of the Dalai Lama, studies happiness scientifically. He says that many people confuse pleasure with happiness, but it’s important to distinguish between the two. Pleasure is temporary and uses up energy, while happiness is sustainable well-being cultivated through mind training. In this TED Talk, he explains that it’s possible to train your brain to be more serene. You just have to know how.

Changing Your Perspective on Stress: Embrace It as a Friend

TED Talk – How to Make Stress Your Friend

TED Talks are short speeches that communicate an idea worth spreading. They are designed to capture the audience’s attention, inspire them, and encourage action after the talk.

Health psychologist Kelly McGonigal shows us how to make stress your friend in this fascinating TED Talk. She shares new research that reveals how changing the way you view stress could improve your life.

Reframe your view of stress

Seeing stress in a positive light is key to making it work for you, says Jamieson. He and his team are working on strategies to help people unlearn the belief that stress is bad for you — a process called cognitive reframing.

For example, reframe a traffic jam as an opportunity to listen to your favorite podcast or enjoy the scenery. Or, instead of fuming over someone’s rude behavior, try imagining what their life might be like without them. Keeping situations in perspective is a great way to reduce anger and stress.

In addition, remember that stress is a natural and healthy response to a demanding situation. Ultimately, it is what motivates us to meet challenges, and it can lead to a sense of accomplishment when we overcome them. Also, if you believe that you have control over your life, it may help you cope better with stressful situations. Research shows that those who believe they have a good deal of control over their lives have a lower risk of premature death than those who don’t.

Create a healthy lifestyle

Stress can be a powerful force for change, but only if you make it work for you. Developing healthy lifestyle habits like deep breathing, mindfulness meditation and healthy eating can help reduce cortisol levels. In addition, finding a support system and practicing self-care can make a big difference. It is important to talk about your stressors with friends and family, but don’t become a person who constantly gripes or complains.

TED is a nonprofit organization that shares “ideas worth spreading” in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). The organization began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, but now covers almost all topics, from science to global issues. Their speakers include politicians, celebrities, scientists, authors and even actors. There are thousands of TED talks available on their website, and new videos are added daily. Many of the talks are accessible on podcasts, such as Be Healthful’s TED Radio.

Practice self-compassion

Studies show that people who are more self-compassionate tend to be more motivated, less lazy and more successful over time. They still recognize when they have fallen short, but they don’t get caught up in self-criticism and judgement.

Self-compassion is a positive emotion, whereas self-criticism is negative. Self-compassion is also different from avoidance, such as numbing or distracting yourself with alcohol or drugs.

For example, if you notice that you are feeling down or guilty after failing at something, you can try writing a self-compassionate letter. This technique involves thinking of an imaginary friend who would be supportive of you and writing a note from this person’s perspective.

For more information on practicing self-compassion, check out this comprehensive PDF workbook from the Centre for Clinical Interventions. The first modules (Understanding, Barriers to and Preparing for Self-Compassion) offer background information, while the later ones (Compassionate Imagery and Self-Compassionate Behavior) have more hands-on guidance and exercises. You can also find psychoeducational videos on these topics on our site.

Practice gratitude

Practicing gratitude is an important aspect of healthy living and can make you feel better mentally, physically and spiritually. There are a variety of ways to practice gratitude, including keeping a gratitude journal or using apps that prompt you throughout the day. In addition, you can express gratitude to others by doing things for them or simply writing them a letter or note.

If you find it hard to appreciate things during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by identifying your basic needs and feeling grateful that they are being met. For example, you may be thankful for having a place to sleep or the ability to video call your friends.

Another way to practice gratitude is to recruit a buddy who can help you stay on track and be a cheerleader when you need it. This can be a roommate, significant other or friend. You can also ask a mental health professional or primary care doctor for more tips.

The Power of TED Talks

TED Talk – 5 Ways to Listen Better

TED Talks are powerful because they make a connection to the audience. They showcase problems that need to be addressed and propose solutions.

Each talk revolves around a unique idea worth sharing. They are limited to 18 minutes, demanding clarity and concise communication. They should inspire, inform and be less about promotion.

1. Sit back and relax

While all presentations take time and effort to prepare, creating a high-quality TED Talk can be especially challenging. TED organizers chose the 18-minute talk length based on neuroscience and strategy—it’s long enough to flesh out an idea, but short enough for audiences to digest and understand it. That’s why it’s so important to have a trusted team to help you “murder your darlings” before delivering a talk.

Julian Treasure shares his advice for how to listen better in this TED Talk. His use of vocal variety, hyperbole and audience engagement captures the attention of his audience, while also driving home the importance of the topic.

As an independent learner, it’s essential to be an ACTIVE listener. Listen to the speaker more than once, and analyse their presentation, using the five listening skills that Julian Treasure outlines: silence; the mixer; savoring; listening position; and RASA.

2. The Mixer

TED is an organization that hosts conferences where individuals from all walks of life talk about ideas they feel are important and worth spreading. Though the company originally began with technology, entertainment and design, its talks have now widened to encompass a wide variety of topics from global issues to business. It has a collection of videos of talks from politicians, scientists and actors. It also features TED-Ed, a channel that creates short animated educational videos, and TEDTalks Director’s Cut, a collection of select TED Talks that have been remastered with new footage or animations.

The TED Audio Podcast is available on all major podcast platforms, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Play, Stitcher, RadioPublic and Castbox. It features interviews with speakers and other people involved in TED, as well as a wide range of topics.

3. Savor

This download includes a Microsoft Word worksheet and PDF version to accompany the TED Talk video “5 Ways to Listen Better” by Julian Treasure. This resource is for classroom use only and may not be distributed to non-students. It is designed to help students analyze the information presented in the video and answer the questions. It is a great companion for the lesson on The Mixer.

TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring the spirit of TED to communities around the world.

4. R.A.S.A.

TED is a non-profit organization that posts international talks online for free distribution under the slogan “ideas worth spreading”. The interviews, known as TED Talks, are given in 18 minutes or less by individuals such as actors, musicians, scientists, politicians and businessmen. Initially the talks focused on technology, entertainment and design but have broadened over time to include global issues such as healthcare, education and globalization. The talks are available at the TED website and through platforms such as iTunes, Stitcher, iHeartRadio, RadioPublic and Spotify. The interviews are also available as podcasts, which often feature transcripts.

The TED organization was founded by Richard Saul Wurman and Harry Marks in 1984.

5. Silence

Silence is an important part of listening. However, it is important to understand that silence must be experienced as accepting and not judgmental. People can pick up on judgments and evaluations that are communicated silently, and they may not be so willing to share with you in the future.

TED is an international nonprofit organization devoted to spreading ideas in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, but has since grown to include talks on almost any topic, from science to global issues.

The TED Talk video, “5 Ways to Listen Better,” by Julian Treasure is available for viewing online at ted.com. You can also download a pdf worksheet bundle to accompany this video.

Ted 2: A Sequel That Lacks the Magic of the Original

Ted 2 (DVD) Review

After the success of Ted in 2012, a sequel was inevitable. It tries to shoot for the moon conceptually by adding themes like marriage equality and civil rights into the raunchy stoner comedy about a foul-mouthed talking bear.

It doesn’t always work, but it’s still a lot of fun to watch. You’ll get laughs from pop-culture segues and jokes that seem like they were written well before Deflategate happened.

1. 105 minutes

The original Ted worked because it was a funny movie that also had some touching moments. But Ted 2 feels like it is trying to be a road trip movie, a court room movie and a caper movie all at once. This doesn’t work and makes the film seem disjointed.

Despite the crude language and sexual innuendo, MacFarlane’s comedy is not mean-spirited and goes for comic rhythm rather than shock value. His characters are likable and his cast, especially Jessica Barth as the brassy checkout girl Tami-Lynn, is terrific.

But the 115-minute running time stretches on, with a climax that is reminiscent of the first film’s (minus a big finale at Comic Con). And while it is entertaining, this film has not added any new material to the stale concept.

2. 93 minutes

Ted 2 lacks the surprise and charm of its predecessor. The movie tries to be too many things at once – a road trip, a caper and a court room drama. It also projects a strange world view in its depiction of minorities and homosexuals. MacFarlane’s oddball non sequitur and cultural references are still fun but there is less of the original wit and spirit here.

The film misses the mark in its attempt to be a political statement and too often falls into cheap shock humor like when the gang pelts joggers with food or rapist Donny (Giovanni Ribisi) tries to cut up Ted’s crotch. The 115-minute running time dragged on and the climax at New York Comic Con felt padded.

Mark Wahlberg and Jessica Barth are solid but they cannot carry the whole load.

3. 93 minutes

Ted 2 is not the worst movie ever made, but it does lack a lot of the mischievous magic that was found in its 2012 predecessor. Despite the fact that the film made a lot of money, it never quite reached the heights of its predecessor.

The main problem with this sequel is that it tries to be socially relevant in a very odd way. It wants to be a film about a person being not just a mere piece of property, but also a soul and that is not the right direction for this kind of movie.

In addition to that, some of the characters seem less endearing and more mean-spirited this time around. For instance, the scene where John, Ted and Tami-Lynn pelt joggers with food is just plain rude.

4. 93 minutes

After he and Tami-Lynn finally tie the knot, Ted is forced to prove that he’s a person in court with the help of his best friend John (Mark Wahlberg) and their new lawyer Samantha (Amanda Seyfried). But this MacFarlaneized sequel commits the cardinal sin of sequels: it’s not as funny as the original.

Despite a few choice laughs and a Busby Berkeley-esque dance sequence, the movie quickly wears thin. There’s a distinct lack of chemistry between the leads, and a lot of ill-advised humor. One scene sees the gang pelt joggers with food, an act that’s more mean than funny. And when the film attempts to get serious about civil rights, it veers into the territory of satire. It’s a shame, because MacFarlane can still be disarmingly funny.

5. 93 minutes

After a sleeper hit in 2012, the foul-mouthed anthropomorphic talking bear gets his own movie sequel. Like its predecessor, it shoots for the moon conceptually but ultimately splatters to the ground like gallons of donated semen.

Ted and his new wife, Tami-Lynn (Jessica Barth), try to have a baby through sperm donation. But when the court rules that he is not a person, they seek help from an eager young civil rights attorney played by Amanda Seyfried.

While the legal drama in Ted 2 doesn’t quite have the heart of its illustrious predecessor, it still offers plenty of locker room humor and bounteous pop-culture in-jokes. As such, it should please fans of the original and satisfy those who clamor for more time spent with this lovable slacker.

The Evolution of TEDx Events and Branding

TEDx Design

TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged. Since then, the organization has expanded its reach to include conferences, a video platform and a wide array of programs with one goal in mind: spreading ideas.

Teams are no longer required to include the TEDx tagline “x=independently organized TED event” in their logos. However, they must still use their unique event name (including the full location name) in all branded materials.

Stage Design

TED is an organization that spreads ideas worth spreading through short talks of 18 minutes or less. TEDx events are independently organized by local communities under a free license from TED. Each TEDx event has its own theme and speakers, but some design elements must be consistent across all events.

TEDx branding standards include the use of a specific font (Helvetica) and the color red in all designs. The wording “TEDx” must be written in all caps and centered. Your location name must appear below the TEDx logo and be aligned left.

You can use dimensional letters as part of your stage design, but they must be attached to a base so they don’t stand up on their own. Using a patterned fabric or a paint pattern is also acceptable as long as it doesn’t cover the entire background of the letters.

Social Areas

TED is an organization that shares ideas worth spreading. It began in 1984 as a conference where technology, entertainment and design converged, and now covers topics ranging from science to business to global issues. TEDx events are independently organized, but they are based on the TED philosophy and guidelines.

When organizing a TEDx event, it’s important to choose a team of volunteers with the right skills and bandwidth. Look for people with prior project management or event planning experience and who are passionate about TED’s mission.

Cathlyn Melvin helps mission-driven personal brands craft world-changing messages through TEDx coaching and done-for-you copywriting services. She’s been featured on Thrive Global, She Built This, Captivate + Convert, and more. Learn more at her website.

Badges

Badges are one of the most important event materials for attendees. They provide a key piece of information that is used throughout the conference to help navigate and build community.

Badge decks are a great opportunity to experiment with different types of design. Whether it’s breaking the ice with custom conversation starters or making sure that names are readable from across the room, badges should be designed for maximum ease of use.

For TEDx Grand Rapids, we created badge backs that were the philosophical embodiment of our theme: “They look to you.” Each badge featured a grid of headshots from humanity’s great “shifters,” like Florence Nightingale, Wernher von Braun, and Claude Shannon, who were each meant to be looking at the attendee. The badges also included the attendees’ own headshot to further personalize and create a sense of community among attendees.

Programs

TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged. Today, the TED brand covers all topics, from science to business to global issues – and sparks conversations and connections around them. TEDx events are local, independently organized events that use the TED format to spark conversation and community engagement in their communities.

Using the TEDx event license, you can create your own TEDx event to share bold ideas, inspirational stories and transformative experiences with your friends, students or community. Organizers must apply for the TEDx license and agree to the terms of the program.

When you design your event materials, make sure that your logo and fonts are consistent with the TEDx guidelines. Helvetica is the recommended font, but you can also choose Inter Light, which is an open-source alternative.

Event Materials

While TEDx events are independently organized on a community basis, they all share several key features. They are a day of talks, demonstrations and performances that engage participants and foster conversations. They rely on a combination of TEDTalks videos and local presenters to introduce the community to new ideas and inspire dialogue.

TEDx event logos should adhere to the TEDx brand guidelines and be framed by a solid white or black background. They should never be placed on photographic, patterned or illustrated backgrounds.

TEDx organizers may approach prospective sponsors, but the sponsor logos cannot remain on stage for more than a few seconds or be included in team photos. They also cannot influence the content of talks or promote products or services that violate TED’s rules.

TED’s global community of speakers come from every discipline and culture, but they are united in their desire to understand the world around them.

Organizing an event like TED requires careful planning and attention to detail. Organizers should understand TED’s format and attend other TED events to get a better understanding of what it takes to be successful. They should also network with other TEDx organizers to learn best practices.

One of the most important challenges for TEDx Hyderabad was tracking ticket purchases. Samaaro’s comprehensive ticketing system streamlined registration, incorporated Indian payment options, and reduced expenses for a seamless user experience. The theme for this year’s TEDxHyderabad event is “Behind the Scenes,” encouraging speakers to share their field’s unseen, hidden or unknown aspects. It also promotes transparency and an understanding of the challenges and failures that go into creating something extraordinary.

The TEDEd club of Choithram School Indore is a group of students led by their teacher facilitator Ms. Raminder Mac. Students explored a variety of topics and brainstormed ideas for their big talk. They also watched a TEDTalk by India Hawkins, who talked about her journey from chemically treated to natural hair. This inspired them to share their own stories of personal change with others.

TEDxHyderabad is a community of enthusiasts

In the spirit of TED’s mission, “ideas worth spreading,” TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to spark conversation and connection through a combination of live presenters and TED Talks videos. TEDx events are planned and coordinated independently, under a free license granted by TED.

This year, TEDxHyderabad curated a remarkable event that sparked conversation and inspiration through an impressive lineup of speakers. Taking the theme “Rising,” the speakers enlightened attendees with their stories of kindness, humanity, innovation, and resilience in the face of adversity.

However, TEDxHyderabad faced numerous obstacles, including a complicated ticketing process and exorbitant payment gateway charges. To overcome these hurdles, TEDxHyderabad used Samaaro’s ticketing system to streamline registration monitoring, incorporate Indian payment systems, and reduce costs. The platform’s versatile coupon codes and discounts also optimized registration numbers and boosted attendee engagement. Ultimately, these features enabled TEDxHyderabad to build a robust community of event enthusiasts. The resulting event was a resounding success.

The Evolutionary Journey of Ancestors: Fingers, Tools, and Culture

TED Talk – 5 Fingers of Evolution

1. The ancestors

Using thumbs up and down, this video by Paul Andersen from TED-Ed provides students with a mnemonic device to remember five powerful parts that drive evolution. It is a great video for biology, honors biology or as a review in AP Biology.

It is possible that the number of fingers and toes we have owes its origin to the fish with 5 bones in their pectoral fins who were first able to make it to land. However, it is more likely that this was just a good number and there was no advantage to changing it.

Another factor is gene flow, which occurs when animals move between populations and bring new genes to the population. This is why you can find reddish-brown bunnies in a population of gray ones, for example.

3. The ancestors’ tools

Having five fingers on each hand is a result of evolution, but it wasn’t because it gave us some kind of advantage. It was likely just a random number that happened to be lucky for those fish that had 5 bones in their pectoral fins and made the leap from water to land.

Scientists have discovered evidence of our ancestors using tools. A set of cut marks found on animal bones shows that Australopithecus afarensis used stone tools to kill and butcher animals. This Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey Tool Guide will help students learn about the importance of these early inventions.

5. The ancestors’ culture

The ancestors’ culture can tell us a lot about how they lived, where they came from, and what their priorities were. We can also learn about what they did and didn’t like, which can help us understand where their values came from and how we might be able to connect with them. For example, the ancestors who had five fingers on their hands likely did so because it was a good number for them. They were a bit more agile than those who had 4 or 6 fingers, so they may have had an advantage in the water. However, this was probably not the only factor that led them to evolve into humans.
